WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?
Traditional acupuncture is an ancient Eastern healthcare system that is increasingly popular in the West. The majority of people who come for acupuncture want help with a variety of problems. Traditional acupuncture treatment aims not only to address the specific problem, but also to treat any underlying imbalance which may be causing or exacerbating that problem or limiting the body’s own ability to heal itself. This means that it is a holistic form of health care which aims to improve your health in general, as well as addressing any particular problems you have. These two aspects of our treatment go hand in hand.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU COME FOR TREATMENT
When you first come for treatment, we begin by discussing your health problem in detail; for example, we will want to know how long you have had it, what you think might have caused it, and how it effects your life. We go into this in considerable detail so that we can understand fully in what way your body (or mind) is not functioning optimally. We also discuss other aspects of your health as well, such as your digestion, sleep, energy levels etc, and we take your pulse and look at your tongue as part of the diagnostic check. All of this helps us to understand how best to help you, and we then can give you your first acupuncture treatment.
WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE LIKE?
Acupuncture involves inserting a few very fine needles into specific points in the body which help restore harmony and balance to your system overall, thereby helping with your specific problem. These needles are single-use and sterile, so that acupuncture is in fact an extremely safe form of treatment. Because they are so fine, you may not feel the insertion at all, although subsequently there may be a slight dull ache or tingling sensation as the needle begins to have its effect. Most people find acupuncture treatment to be a thoroughly relaxing experience.
OTHER ASPECTS OF YOUR TREATMENT
Depending on your condition, in addition to acupuncture our treatment may also include other modalities such as massage, electro acupuncture, moxibustion and cupping; we always explain thoroughly what we want to do, so that you always feel in control of your treatment and understand what we are doing and why we are doing it. As an extension of this, we may also discuss things you can do in your everyday life, for example exercises or dietary changes, which will complement the treatment and speed up your healing process. After the first treatment we will usually give you an idea of how many treatments you are likely to need, and how often you should come.
